Workshops

CHORD-talk-in-interaction organises theoretical workshops with experts to discuss the state of the art of data-sharing as a scientific practice in corpus-based research on talk-in-interaction and practical workshops to experiment with tools and techniques. The events take place at one of the partner universities (USI, University of Basel, University of Lausanne, University of Neuchâtel). Anyone interested in open data practices and research on spoken language and interaction is welcome to participate. Attendance is free of charge and registration is appreciated. A certificate of attendance will be issued upon request. In some workshops focused on tools and techniques, the number of places is limited.

  • CHORD-talk-in-interaction closing workshop: Project results and future perspectives

This hybrid workshop closed the project “Data-sharing skills in corpus-based research on talk-in-interaction”. The aim of the event was to present the findings of the project, to assess current practices of sharing and reusing research data under consideration of their technical environments in various fields, to discuss the infrastructure needed in Switzerland to manage audio/video-recorded and transcribed data of naturally occurring interaction, and to address future training needs. The project members developed these topics together with Rita Gautschy (director of DaSCH) and Cristina Grisot (national coordinator of CLARIN-CH) as discussants and the workshop participants were invited to share their experience in several discussion rounds.

The event was organised by Johanna Miecznikowski (USI) and Nina Profazi (USI) on behalf of CHORD-talk-in-interaction. It took place at USI Università della Svizzera italiana on Monday, September 16th, 2024, 13:30h – 17:30h. The event could be attended in person and via Zoom.

  • Handling and storing sensitive data in collaborative research projects

In this workshop, Katharina Lobinger, Associate Professor for online communication at the Institute of Digital Technologies for Communication (USI), reported on her experience with collecting, storing, and publishing sensitive (visual) data as compiled in her SNF-funded study “Visualised relationships - social uses and conflicts. A repertoire-oriented study of visual and image-related communication between close friends and couples in Switzerland”. She gave a one-hour presentation addressing ethical issues at various stages of her study, which was followed by an extended discussion and exchange with the workshop participants.

The event was organised by Sara Greco (Università della Svizzera italiana) on behalf of CHORD-talk-in-interaction. It took place at USI Università della Svizzera italiana on Monday, April 29th, 2024, 10:00h – 12:00h. The event could be attended in person and via Zoom.

  • Database evolution for the study of social interaction: Designing annotations for long-term usability

In this workshop, Johannes Wagner (University of Southern Denmark) and Carole Etienne (CNRS) addressed issues related to the ‘longevity’ of annotations of large databases used for research on social interaction. In particular, they focused on the challenges and best practices in the development of annotation schemes with regard to the long-term preservation and usability of data, thus putting the evolution of databases at the centre.

The event was organised by Simona Pekarek Doehler (University of Neuchâtel) and Jérôme Jacquin (University of Lausanne) on behalf of CHORD-talk-in-interaction. It took place at the University of Neuchâtel from Monday, January 15th, 2024, 13:30h – 17:15h, to Tuesday, January 16th, 2024, 09:00h – 12:00h. The event could be attended in person and via Webex.

  • Designing, building and using data banks of interactional corpora from a conversation analytic perspective

In this workshop, Arnulf Deppermann, Silke Reineke, Henrike Helmer and Mark-Christoph Müller from the Leibniz Institute for the German Language (IDS) gave presentations on the design and application of large machine-readable corpora of spoken interaction, drawing on the IDS corpus FOLK (Forschungs- und Lehrkorpus / Research and Teaching Corpus) to discuss and illustrate the challenges of creating and using them. There was also an open discussion on the possibilities and limitations of Open Research Data, allowing the participants to exchange views on current trends towards sharing research data and the conditions under which they can be made available to the scientific community.

The event was organised by Lorenza Mondada (University of Basel) on behalf of CHORD-talk-in-interaction. It took place at the University of Basel from Thursday, December 7th, 2023, 13:00h – 18:30h, to Friday, December 8th, 2023, 09:00h – 16:00h. The event could be attended on site and via Zoom.

  • KIParla corpus: History, methodological choices and future challenges

In the workshop, Caterina Mauri and Silvia Ballarè (University of Bologna) presented the KIParla corpus of spoken Italian and discussed this case as an example of open research data in linguistics. The invited speakers dialogued with Lorenza Mondada (University of Basel) in the role of discussant and engaged in a more general debate with the audience about practices and challenges related to data collection, storage, sharing and reuse in the study of talk-in-interaction.

The event was organised by Johanna Miecznikowski (USI) on behalf of CHORD-talk-in-interaction. It took place at USI, Lugano, on Friday, April 28th, 2023, 16:00h - 18:30h and online via Zoom. There was a small networking reception after the workshop.
